David Bergé / Time Based Editions

Me, Le Corbusier, and a friend

With Me, Le Corbusier, and a friend, David Bergé activates a 240-page printed book, bearing the same title, paired with a 43-minute audio track, while the audience’s hands and eyes scan and move through the book. The audio guides the audience through the printed archive of photographs as a staged story unfolds: in 1911 two young men discover themselves during a journey to the ‘Orient’. The dialogue between August (the friend) and Charles-Édouard (the future architect Le Corbusier) comes to life through the actions of the audience, who follow the instructions in the sound. This work invites reflection on travel, friendship, and the discovery of new worlds.

David Bergé (1983, Belgium) is an artist whose works transform everyday life and objects into time- and book-based forms that are often participatory. His Walk Pieces, begun in 2008, are immersive experiences in which the audience joins the artist for a carefully devised, silent urban walk. The walk lasts 100 minutes, during which participants are asked to refrain from verbal exchange and picture-taking. More recent works have taken the form of ‘material writing’ and ‘situated publishing’, such as his book Bialetti: A Catalogue (Spector Books, 2023) and the performance Fake Book Launch (2025). David Bergé is the founder of the experimental publishing platform PHOTOGRAPHIC EXPANDED PUBLISHING ATHENS. The platform currently houses two imprints, Time Based Editions (co-founded by Bergé and Ant Hampton in 2023) and kyklàda.press.
