Signal Flow

Signal Flow is a performance where the belly listens, a finger plucks the collarbone, and vibrations travel through the skin. Each sound wave rises and falls, different every time, yet always finite. The body makes itself heard and seen, letting its presence be read through movement and resonance. Resonance transceivers and microphones, cast in clay and shaped to fit the body, render the interior space of the belly audible through touch. These ceramic instruments are at once sculptures and extensions of the body. Vibrations captured by water flow into a rounded bowl and rest in the hands.
(Written from the belly in collaboration with Céline Mathieu.)

Maika Garnica (1992, Belgium) uses sculpture as a starting point to explore the relationship between artist, viewer and space. Variations in context and interaction cause her work to shift continuously, moving between sculpture, utilitarian object, and sound installation. She develops prototypes that investigate the complex interplay between form and matter, while opening up possibilities for new forms of communication.
